Xbox 360 Motion Control accidentally confirmed?!?!?!

In a new developer video over at IGN (I know two blog references in like a minute, but hey they get the best scoops), Ken Lobb the creative director at Microsoft Games Studio, showed a bit of gameplay from the upcoming Rare game Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bults. About half way through the video he mentions "grabbing the wrench and twisting the controller". Now maybe he was saying the controller on the crane Banjo was on top of but with all the rumors that were circulating about Microsoft's possible motion controller (codename Newton) and it's use in Banjo and Kazooie, it's hard not to think he might have slipped up. With E3 less than a week away, we shouldn't have to wait long to see if Ken might have let the cat out of the bag early!

By the way, am I the only one really excited about this game? Take a look at the video and post your thoughts below!

Pre-order Fable 2 and Start Getting Rich for Free!!!(well in the game atleast)

Microsoft Game Studios and Lionhead Studies announce that if you pre order Fable 2, you'll get to download the XBLA Pub Games for free, when they release in August. The Pub Games are 3 downloadable casino style XBLA games, that allow you to earn money (or debt) that will transfer over to your character once the game ships. The Pub Games will be released for 800 Microsoft points but with this offer you can get them for the low low price of....FREE! IGN has a hands on of the games for you to check out.

Let's be honest, if you're going to download these games then there's no doubt in your mind that you're going to purchase the game. So why not kill two birds with one stone huh? And by the way, what do you think about the idea of incorporating small XBLA games that make a difference in a retail game?

To walk, or not to walk... that is the question

So recently I bought a couple of games from gamestop and have been trying to beat them. Between the Devil May Cry series, Hitman series, Lost Odyssey, Resistance, and a few others, I don't have the time like I used to anymore. Of course I am upset but when you enter the real world you realize you have more important things to do than kill bamas on Halo 3 and COD4.

Looking at my now growing mass of video games on my entertainment center and with a Nintendo Wii coming in, I can't dedicate the time to explore the beauty of games completely in depth as I would like. This brought me to the toughest question of my gaming career, "Should I use a walkthrough or tough the game out and explore all its intrcacies?" So I made a list.

Advantage:
1) a walkthrough will save me time (what is important in the level what is not)
2) a walkthrough will tell me where all the hidden items are
3) a walkthrough is free online (ign, gamefaqs)
4) I have to read (which I don't have time to do during the day) and
5) a walkthrough lets me get through games in 2 days as opposed to 2 weeks

Disadvantage:
1) I have someone telling me what to do and when (which makes the game lose its element of surprise)
2) I lose any credibility as a real gamer and
3) I have to look back and forth between the laptop and tv

I decided I would rather lose my title as a real gamer and run through as many games as possible so I could later critique them and caompare them with newer games. For example comparing the Devil May Cry series, Lost Odyssey to any other rpg etc.

Please share your thoughts and ideas on this... bama.

In-Game XMB - July 2nd

It's official. The much anticipated 2.40 firmware for the PS3 will be released on July 2nd (this Wednesday). Many of the features in this firmware are way overdue, but at least they are finally coming out. Some of these features include: in-game xmb, sending/receiving messages during a game, trophy support, clock, custom soundtracks, etc.

The PlayStation blog has a video walkthrough of some of the features of 2.40. Check it out!

Here are some more PSN "gamer card" screenshot. As you can see in the second screenshot, there are features that are similar to XBL's current setup such as the compare trophy feature. Good stuff!

Soulcalibur IV Character Select Screen

It's not completely finished yet, but here is the character select screen for Soulcalibur IV. This is the PS3 version since it has Darth Vader in it, but there are still 4 blank spots. One of them would probably be The Apprentice from The Force Unleashed (new Star Wars game). There's also a rumor that Kratos from the God of War series will be a PS3 exclusive character. Only time will tell.

On a side note, the character portraits look really nice since they are using the character concept art. Man I can't wait until this game come out! July 29th cannot come any faster.

Rumor: PSN Trophy Screen?

As PS3's 2.40 firmware inches closer and closer to arrival, one has to wonder how the trophy system will work. There are two screenshots floating around on the internet showing the PS3 "gamer card."

Looking at these pictures, it seems that the "gamer card" system will work in levels. You get a trophy in a game and it'll give you "exp" to will increase your level. The higher the level, the more trophies you have. XBL watch out!

In-Game XMB officially announced for PS3! Fanboys wet themselves!

In a post today on the Playstation blog, Eric Lempel (director of PSN Operations) confirmed that firmware update 2.40 will bring in-game XMB access and enable trophies, among other features being announced soon. The post has no news of a date for the update, only mentioning that update 2.36 will come soon and bring with it system stability for certain titles.

Until then, fanboys can go over their friends houses who have the Xbox 360 and check out the features coming to the PS3, that have been available since the 360's launch.
UPDATE: Firmware update 2.36 is now live! The wait is on for 2.40!

The reason to own a PS3!!!!!

Now I know what you're all thinking, "Ohh MGS4 came out this week, he must be talking about that." Well smarty pants guess what....WRONG!!! Unfortunately Gamefly seems to have run dry of copies of my top three games, so I'm currently game less (besides midnight games of Halo 3 or COD4) and have instead decided to start my Netflix account again. Man, am I glad I did that! For those of you that don't know Netflix carries Blu-Ray titles now, and the first thing I did was fill my Q with BR-D titles (Blu-Ray Disc). And what was at the top of my list and the first movie I received? The Ultimate Avengers!!!!!(*Bum Bum BUMMMMMM*)

O.K. first off when I received the disc, I found out that the BR-D copy also contained the sequel on it. After taking my first summer midterm, I came home sat down with my wife, child, and younger brother and popped it in. And for the next three hours (yes I watched them back to back) I was absorbed into the Marvel universe, and with the bright colors on my 40 inch HDTV, I loved every minute. Every Marvel fan should give them both a viewing, but the first one is better than the second. Why was it better? Because it gives The Hulk proper justice. The Hulk smashes and he smashes reaaaaaallllllllllllll goooooooooooooddddddddd!

Look let's be honest, the PS3's lineup is pretty weak (even with MGS4 coming out, chances are you've played everything else worth while) so put it to good use and pick up this Blu-Ray title! Ohh and after watching these, I'm spending my first father's day at the movies watching the new Incredible Hulk. Enjoy The Ultimate Avengers and thank me later!

A WHOLE NEW WORLD!!!

Work sucks. School sucks. This weather sucks.

It's 10,000 degrees outside and you get swamp butt walking from your car to your class or work and hate your life. You work for 2 hours looking at a computer screen or working with incompetent individuals who ask you how to use the copier. You go to the bathroom for your break only to realize after the fact that there is no toilet paper. You finish your day after zoning out 3 times and day dreaming about the random hottie that walked in to your office and go back into your car where it smells like something died in it (maybe that was a little piece of your water stained pants from this morning). Traffic (shaking head). Then finally home.

You sit around and look around your room. Roof is leaking brown water. Toilet is always running. Your heater shoots out cooler air then your air condition. The milk in your fridge turned to yogurt. It sucks just like work. You want a new home, a new life, a new look. You want (in the words of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, a whole new world).

Well look no further. Phantasy Star Online Universe is offering a free downloadable demo that is fairly nice. It could be a lot better, but if you want my personal opinion leave a comment and I'll reply. You can choose four different classes (and two genders per class) that you view yourself as and also can change how you look and what you wear.

Now you can run around dancing with random people, or stare at them and contemplate what they must be thinking about as they sit down and glare out of a window. Talk about deep. Sitting down in a video game and waiting to see who runs up to you to dance with their butt cheeks in your face (shaking head).

Anyway, if you want a free demo for a long game, and to have fun this is a nice change of pace and reality. By the way, to have more fun, create your own preset comments to make some of those deep philosophical squatters what you really think of their pose.

BCG's Weekend Pick!

On the lineup for this weekend are sports, movies and games! This weekend's sports kick off with UFC 85: Bedlam, which the main event being Matt Hughes against Thiago Alves. The card isn't the most star studded line up we've seen but quality fighters like Bisping, Vera and Swick are fighting on the main card. Either chip in with some buddies for the pay per view or head over to Hooters and watch it for the cost of some wings. On Sunday is game 2 of the NBA finals with the Boston Celtics leading the L.A. Lakers 1-0 in the series. The game's free and is looks to be a better series than first thought, and it seems as though the Lakers won't be steamrolling anybody to their 15th title.

On the movies front are Kung Fu Panda and Don't Mess with the Zohan. Critics have been high on KFP and not so excited about Zohan but hey if you like Sandler than you know what to expect and should enjoy this also.

Finally we come to the games. Some pretty good releases this week, with Lego Indiana Jones, The Bourne Conspiracy and of coarse Ninja Gaiden II. You really can't go wrong with any of these titles. NG II is as bloody as a game can get, Bourne looks like a solid rent, and if you've never played any of the Lego games, don't over look this one because their kiddie appearance hides a really fun game.

This weekend is tough to pick, if I could I'd do it all but since I can't I'll make a pick. This weekend's pick is... the Movies! I picked sports and MMA last weekend and like I said this weekend's card isn't the strongest. The games are great but with none of them having online multiplayer and the rest of the months game releases are a bit weak, you can take your time with these. Plus who doesn't love funny animated animal movies, especially ones about kung fu!(Look I like Jack Black and I've been to the movies once since my son was born 5 months ago, so I could use a night out!) But honestly, you really can't go wrong with whatever you pick, so enjoy and thank me on Monday!

Take Two announces even more "Rapture" in our future!

In a financial call to investors, Take Two Interactive chairman Strauss Zelnik confirmed that the company intends to release a third BioShock game. When asked whether or not the upcoming movie would co-inside with the release of BioShock 2, Zelnik answered saying, "Its unlikely the picture would be released coincident with BioShock 2. It's more likely it would be released coincident with BioShock 3."

Of course details are essentially no-existent as of right now considering that the sequel is still quiet a ways off, but anyone who played the first knows that there can never be too much BioShock.

BCG's Weekend Pick!

The weekend is upon us, so what is there to do? Well as tempting as the Sex and The City movie is, this weekend is an all MMA weekend. On Saturday at 9pm est., CBS is having it's first nationally televised MMA event, "EliteXC presents Primetime". On the card is Robbie Lawler taking on Scott Smith, Gina Carano (of American Gladiators fame) taking on Kaitlin Young, and the main event, Kimbo Slice against James Thompson. While everyone is tuning in for the Kimbo Slice fight, the true talent comes in the form of the Lawler-Smith fight and has the potential to show what a true MMA fight is like.

Then on Sunday at 9pm est., Versus is airing WEC's Faber vs Pulver. For those who don't know, WEC is the UFC's smaller sister company. This show should far and above be the better of the two shows this weekend and it's a shame it won't get the coverage the CBS show will. The main event between current WEC featherweight champion and #1 ranked featherweight in the world, Urijah Faber and former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver should be nothing short of electric. For those who get Versus, (and this blogger does, thank God) should not miss out.

The best part of this weekend's events? They're free! So spend the money on some pizzas, a case of beer, invite the buddies over and enjoy. You can thank me on Monday!

Ubisoft taking us "Beyond Good and Evil" again!

At Ubisofts 2008 event in Paris, the CEO Yves Guillemot introduced a trailer for a, as of now, unannounced project by Michel Ancel. Ancel was the designer of Ubisoft critically acclaimed (but under selling) 2003 game, Beyond Good and Evil.

Anybody who played the first game can clearly see that the trailer is for a sequel and in all honesty...it's about time. Take my advice, if you missed out on the first one, do not let this one pass you by. Actually if you can find it, play through the first one. Even though it's five years old, it's still a great game and one of my favorites from the original xbox.

Ubisoft brings it's own "White" to the mountains!

Ubisoft officially announced it's new snowboarding title, Shaun White Snowboarding. Utilizing the Assassin's Creed engine, Ubisoft hopes to bring a more realistic approach to the action sports genre. Ubisoft intends to have 16 player online and is working closely with the "red tomato" himself Shaun White, to bring a new perspective to the game.

This blogger can't wait to see that bright red hair contrast against the powder, on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this holiday!

The world to become a bit "ODD"-er!

The highly regarded Oddworld series is coming back! Confirmed by Oddworld Inhabitants studio president, Lorne Lanning, to GamesIndustry.biz. They hope to bring a more cinematic feel to the series and hope to bring animations that are on par with movies.

The company is currently working on another project, so it will be a few more years before we see this out on shelves.

Most Epic Game of the Year

3 shadows run beside the crashing waves of the beach as the sun is setting. Dressed in fatigues and a helmet, with no gun in hand, but rather a knapsack on their back, they continue to run... why? because the music is just that epic that they want to keep running.

It's no Halo, GTA4, COD4, Resistance, Gears of War, Dark Sector... you get the point, but rather it is a simple game that consists of moving left and right, and separating your characters far enough so when a bomb hits the ground you don't lose one of your men, and every couple of seconds if you survive you get another soldier added to your platoon (even after you lose one).

Run Soldier RUN!!!

With a name like that, it has to be good. Music is great (adding to the epicness), the actual video quality (as if you are watching an old tape of WWII with the vertical lines going up and down on screen) makes it fun to watch.

InsAnE iN tHe Mem...MaMe

Whatcha know about being a kid in the early 90's, dropping quarters into the TMNT game at the arcades like it was hot? Arcades? Remember... those old archaic rooms where there were about 20 machines where you had to stand up and mash the buttons numerous times? Do you remember games where you had a HUGE red or blue gun and stood 2 feet away from the screen shooting at aliens pop out from crates or criminals that are shooting you from a helicopter.

If not then check out this website

http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/arcade/mame.html

MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. This is the definition of a true broke college gamer. No money, but internet access at school or at your parents house will get you every arcade game ever made. Let me say it again, EVERY ARCADE GAME EVER MADE! No need to go out and spend money on systems or games from the past, this is the real deal.

So in the end you get all your favorite arcade games on your computer and can play them right off. But wait, your 12" monitor is to small, no worries, you could hook up an S video cable to your plasma, hd, dlp, whatever tv and play right off of it (if you have this option available). Also if you have an xbox 360, you could play using your controls with an attachment piece.

Enjoy. And if you have any old school games you like, post a comment and share the love.

Inclass Game of the Week

And I am back, to give another in class game of the week. This is a special edition article because I am actually in class writing it. It is not like I would pay attention in Intro Artificial Intelligence. And just so you know, it is virtually impossible to actually do real A.I. and I'm sorry to burst your bubble. So Pac-xon takes the characters from pac-man and use them in their game. What happens is that when you move pac-man a tail will be made that will follow you. To close the tail you connect to the solid borders. Meanwhile there are the ghosts characters that if u touch you or your tail it will kill you. You need to fill out 80% of the map to move to the next level. It is very addictive and the pac-man theme just adds to the fun!

Economy-ics

The sun has been shining and the birds have been chirping over the last few days in Northern Virginia, and Easter has come and gone (no I'm not crazy, but I am Coptic Orthodox www.stmarkdc.org). Fellow Broke College Gamer Rob came down to visit family as well which gave us time to catch up and discuss video game... belt buckles. Besides that though, Rob and I spent some time together at several video game stores (EB Games and Game Stop) just browsing, destroying the video game demos in less than 5 minutes, and staring all googley-eyed at the GTA4 promos.

Walking through all these stores, I noticed something that I really wasn't aware of before. Something that has been there for the last 8 years now but every time I walk in, it tends to grow more and more, taking over the store. Originally it was no bigger than just the black cart they stayed in, but now, oh man now...

These used game carts are so conveniently placed in the middle of the store with huge signs of "$9.99 cart and below," or "Buy 2 used games Get 1 FREE!" These of course are great deals, for these older systems if you have them (and by the way, original xbox is $60, game cube is $30, and PS2 is $70), but with these new next gen consoles out, I just shake my head and walk away. I don't sell games, in fact I have kept every game I have ever had for any system, yet seeing these carts make me wonder. The majority of people probably bought these games at retail price when they first came out, beat them, and then sold them for $11, $27 or what $38, only to have these stores turn right around and almost double the price.

I remember the joy of opening up brand new games and taking the plastic cover off, then the sticker in anticipation of seeing the disc design of the game. Now, this feeling has gone away slowly since I can buy used games from an overstocked cart with games in no order whatsoever and spilling over on to the carpet. Now if you're like me, you will still go to these ugly beasts of wonderful deals to buy games, but if you're like some of my more economic Broke College Gamers, you should look in to getting a Gamefly account.

So if you're like me, be cheap and hold out until those once $60 games go down to $5, or be like a fellow Broke College Gamer and get Gamefly. Either way, stay broke, and enjoy it.

A Little Rant on GTA4...

So I "heard" from somewhere that Grand Theft Auto IV's camera works on a standard axis. You push up on the right stick, the camera goes up. Left goes left, down goes down, right goes right. That's pretty normal. They also have an invert look option which swaps the y-axis. Up goes down, down goes up, and left and right go left and right respectively.

Now what really pisses me off is that there isn't the option in invert the x-axis at all. If you are not familiar with either of these camera schemes, you are going to be stuck trying to learn the camera controls. While it's not a huge deal, it really disappoints me. You would think a game of this much caliber and hype would have a simple option to invert both.

I normally play 3rd person games with both invert x and invert y on so this kinda makes the game unplayable for me... Until I decide to suck it up and play with the crappy camera controls.

Guh...

Difference of Opinion

So I ran into an article online today called "Making Gaming Better". The author put up seven things to make gaming better. Some of his points made sense.... like buying direct, finding random games that get no press but are good, and stop wasting time defending bad games with bad reps. But the other tips would take more away from the gaming experience.
The first thing he said was "don't be a jerk online." HAHAHAHA.....I believe there is a reason for stereotypes and a stereotype for gamers is that we're jerks. Its just our style. For example, the best time I had playing online was when I got drunk with a close friend and played COD4 and having them yell at us. It was even better, and ironic, because my friend was cursing in Arabic and we heard the funniest comments. To tell the gaming community to stop being jerks is like telling frats to stop hazing pledges. It's just not going to happen.
The next thing that sort of made me laugh was that he had an issue with gaming piracy. Piracy is just a part of life now. It is everywhere and is so easy to do. It doesn't mean that I am pro-piracy because we have seen casualties. For example, the Sega Dreamcast, which is in my opinion one of the best systems ever created, was completely hacked and modded so that a person could basically burn all of his/her games. It basically killed Sega's chances of staying in the hardware business. But we all still love what came from that system. So I think piracy will always be around and maybe the gaming companies can lower their prices so we can actually be like...I'm a broke college gamer, but this game is a good cost and I will pay for it.
The last thing that the writer said that made me laugh was be nice to newcomers aka n00bs. And we all know we need an initiation for the newcomers. It's just a part of life. I can't help but think about my WoW experiences. If I wasn't called a n00b in the beginning I wouldn't have tried so hard to become better.
That is just my two cents about it, since thats all I have anyways.

Confessions of a True Broke College Gamer...

I must say that I was a bit iffy when I bought my 360 because I already had a PS3. But man... I must say I'm happy with my decision for reasons I probably shouldn't post here. ^^v

GPA Review: BAWLS G33k B33r

Kicking off our first GPA review is the energy drink BAWLS G33k B33r! G33k B33r is the newest flavor out of the BAWLS line. The catch being that this drink is a high caffeine root beer, a drink that is normally caffeine free. So how does it hold up as both an energy drink and as root beer?

Taste: A

There is no energy drink taste here, just pure unadulterated root beer. If your a root beer fan, which I am, then this is the drink for you. I'd go as far as saying it's better than most of the standard root beers out there.

Energy: B+

It's a nice gradual kick. Not to strong that you get the jitters but not too weak where you have to drink a couple to feel it. It's a nice balance but as someone who's used to caffeine, you might be left wanting just a little more.

Crash: A

No crash at all, you come down gradually and can still function after.

Look: B+

Call me a sucker but I love the bumpy design of the bottle, it just feels right in your hands. The only downside is that brown isn't exactly the sexiest color.

Cumulative GPA: 3.75 B+

On a 4.0 scale, this drink comes pretty close to perfect. If you're an energy drink and root beer fan , than this one's for you. This reviewer is contemplating monthly shipments, so that says something. Look if your still on the fence just put some BAWLS in your mouth (couldn't help it) and try it for yourself!

Gr8est Site Ever?

Remember spending countless hours three feet in front of your 27 inch tube television, mashing those red buttons and pushing stiff directions on the D-pad while Bebop and Rocksteady mopped the floor with you in TMNT2? What about running for 300 yards a game while zig-zagging with Bo Jackoson in Super Tecmo Bowl? Or who could forget the Mario Trilogy?

Now if your family was like mine, they cared more about your education and bought you games once in a blue moon. And remember back in the day when games cost $50? You'd have to save up your allowance, birthday money, Christmas, Easter, chore money just for 1 game.

Well they're back, and FREE. No need to download an emulator here, Ninetendo8 allows you to play all your old school games on about a 4 x 4 screen inside your web browser. With all the games you loved playing growing up (at least on Nitendo), as well as the amazing 8 bit sound, you can't really ask for a better site.

http://www.nintendo8.com/all/

This site offers hundreds of games on the NES and if you scroll through you might even recall games you saw in Blockbuster that your parents wouldn't let you rent for one reason or another. Some of these games obviously were miserable then, and are miserable now, but it's nice to reminisce.

This site does not have all the games for Nintendo, but enough to keep you entertained through a class, or before a boring work meeting. Enjoy

Inclass Game of the Week

Hey all, I am back to this week to give this week's game. Double wires is a very simple game to comprehend but becomes very challenging. All you have to do is click your mouse towards a shape and the stick figure will shoot a string towards it and then lunge itself forwards or back depending on which way you are facing. The goal is to get as far as you can and your score is the length you get before you die. Just be careful while playing in your class, we don't want any sudden noises of disappointment while your professor is trying to explain to you what a derivative is.

The trailer has Sub Zero stomping on Batman's head and Scorpion and Superman are also confirmed, with more to come. Check out the trailer here, MK vs DC, or IGN for more info and begin the fantasy match ups... Joker vs Goro anyone?

GTAIV hijacks a 10/10 from OXM.

Scans of the upcoming issue of Official Xbox Magazine show that they've given Grand Theft Auto IV a perfect score of 10 out of 10. They state that it merits this score on the realistic world, engrossing story and all around vast scope. If your anything like this blogger, you'll be picking up a copy day one and cutting a ton of classes. Just thinking about playing the closest thing to a Michael Bay meets Martin Scorsese epic is making the wait unbearable. Ohh well, I guess pretending to hijack my own car and avoiding the police will have to do for now!

"A Second Look": Dark Sector

Hello Gamers, I would like to start off by talking about some of these gaming critics who think just because a game doesn't meet up to their expectations the rest of the gaming community is supposed to agree. I would like to read more about reviews asking the gaming community what they thought about a certain game rather than give their own opinion. I enjoy reading reviews on games that I'm looking forward to but sometimes it's hard to read a review that's bashing a game that you've been waiting for months to play. Perfect example is Dark Sector, it doesn't have the best multi-player but the single-player mode is great. The game has great visuals, great gameplay, and the controls take some time to get used to. Overall its a great game, I've played through it 3 times already and each time felt fresh. The combination of the Glaive (the name of the blade used in the game) and upgradeable weapons made this game an even better experience me. The game is unique in it's own way, some have said its like that other third person shooter but I refuse to compare the two games. Its so satisfying decapitating any limb you want with the Glaive. The Glaive can also absorb three elements fire, ice , and electricity to add to your arsenal. I could go on and on about Dark Sector but i won't. So go try it for yourself, its a rental for the fact that it has multi-player but it doesn't have multi-player if you know what I mean. Thanks for reading and keep gaming!

The Inclass Game of the Week

Random Defence is my inclass game of the week. It is basically another online Tower Defense game. It shows a challenge that'll hook you as quickly as the Warcraft 3 tower defense games did. It has upgrades and different difficulties that add strategy and will keep you playing this game past the end of your class period. So enjoy because I know you're not paying attention to your professor.
